Like so many stories of early California, Inverness had its birth in an almost incomprehensible maze of land disputes, sales, foreclosures, swindles and lawsuits. After the judicial dust had cleared in 1857, attorneys arguing the disputes, Oscar and James Shafter, ended up owning a large portion of the Point Reyes peninsula.
