Standoff defendant was critical of government in court papers

A man involved in a 12-hour police standoff Monday in Peru was appointed an attorney at his first hearing Tuesday in La Salle County Circuit Court. Jeffrey M. Sorrentino, 56, is charged with firing a gunshot at Sheriff Tom Templeton and a sheriff's lieutenant at 11:40 a.m. Monday, as they approached to remove him from what had been his home.
