With all the allegations flying between pop singer Taylor Swift and former Denver radio DJ David Mueller, it can be hard to keep them all straight. Lucky for us, a jury spent four hours sorting through the claims and counterclaims, and eventually came out on Swift’s side.
The singer was awarded a symbolic dollar after she claims Mueller groped her at a 2013 media event. So what was actually going on? And if the jury believed Swift, why did she only get $ 1?
Swift initially went to Mueller’s bosses with her claim that he “grabbed my ass underneath my skirt,” as she put it in court. After being fired over the incident, Mueller sued Swift, her mother Andrea Swift, and radio promotions director Frank Bell, claiming the trio were deliberately trying to destroy his career and asking for $ 3 million in damages.
Swift then countersued, accusing Mueller of assault and battery, and requesting a symbolic $ 1 in damages as “an example to other women who may resist publicly reliving similar outrageous and humiliating act.” In his closing arguments, Swift’s attorney Doug Baldridge told the jury, “By returning a verdict on Ms. Swift’s counterclaim for a single symbolic dollar, the value of which is immeasurable to all women in this situation…You will tell every woman…that no means no.”
“I acknowledge the privilege that I benefit from in life, in society and in my ability to shoulder the enormous cost of defending myself in a trial like this,” Swift said in a statement released after the verdict. “My hope is to help those whose voices should also be heard. Therefore, I will be making donations in the near future to multiple organizations that help sexual assault victims defend themselves.”
“It means no means no, and it tells every woman that they will determine what is tolerable to their body,” Baldridge added. “I think it’s a new day, because someone with the guts and the courage to stand up with absolutely no upside in doing so — that being Taylor Swift — has told everyone, ‘This is it, the line’s drawn’.”
