Sandra Bullock has adopted a second child. She spoke to People about her daughter, Laila, who had been in foster care in Louisiana, and her son Louis, 5, who was adopted in 2010.

“I can tell you absolutely, the exact right children came to me at the exact right time,” Bullock said. “My family is blended and diverse, nutty, and loving and understanding. That’s a family.”

Shining a Light on Foster Kids

Bullock spoke about her adoption because she wants to draw attention to the hundreds of thousands of children in foster care in the US. The idea is that they — like Laila (pronounced Lila) — can find homes too.

She is, of course, not the only celebrity to adopt by a long shot. But her decision to adopt American children from the foster care system does seem to make her something of a rarity among adopting mom starlets.

Celebrity Adoptions

Madonna has two adopted children, both from Malawi. David Banda, adopted by Madonna and then-husband Guy Ritchie in October, 2006 is believed to have been born in early 2005. Mercy James, adopted by Madonna in June 2009 was born in 2006.

Angelina Jolie adopted her first three children, starting with a baby boy, renamed Maddox Chivan, from Cambodia in March 2002. She was married to fellow actor Billy Bob Thornton at the time and they announced the adoption news together, but Jolie formally adopted Maddox as a single parent. The couple split three months after the adoption was finalized.

Jolie was linked to Brad Pitt when she adopted her second child, Zahara, from Ethiopia in 2005, but she again adopted as a single parent. Pitt officially adopted both children in 2006. In 2007, Jolie and Pitt adopted a third child (after having had a daughter together), a 3 year-old Vietnamese boy named Pax Thien.
