Nonprofit works to keep thousands of Detroiters in their homes as tax foreclosure deadline looms

The yearly effort to save thousands of Wayne County residents from losing their homes in the tax foreclosure auction is ramping up as a key deadline approaches, and a housing advocacy group is looking for volunteers to help go door-to-door to give Detroiters the information they need to keep a roof over their heads. The United Community Housing Coalition says about 17,000 homes were foreclosed throughout the county on April 1. The owners of those homes have until a June 7 foreclosure redemption deadline to pay taxes owed on the property or set up a payment plan with the county to do so.
